Pics from Christmas Time! Domes! Uniforms! Etc!

I was back in Mitchell over Christmas time. I took some pictures, but never got around to posting them.

Here they are!

I thought it was interesting that the Daily Republic still has the old domes by their name.

My sisters-in-law told me that one of the old domes was still in town. My brother-in-law Ben and I drove around and found it!

Ben took a couple pictures of me with it.

It was even bigger than I thought it'd be!

We went to the Corn Palace and went inside to warm up.

I sat on a tractor.

If you go upstairs inside you can see a bunch of Oscar Howe's original sketches he used to plan many of the Corn Palace murals! It's neat!

A week or two ago I saw on facebook that there are going to be new DWU uniforms for their sports teams.

I took a screen shot of Matt Wilber's post on twitter.

They're going to have an MST3K-style Corn Palace silhouette on them!

Cool beans.

Domes, Graduation, and Floaty Pens!

This weekend I got to visit the Corn Palace for my sister-in-law's high school graduation!

They took the onion-shaped domes off of the top and built new ones.

They're not on the palace yet.

I understand why they're replacing the old domes, and I can see what they were going for with the new design, but I don't much care for the new domes.

They're cleaning up the inside, too.

The Corn-cession stand sells bottled water with a Corn Palace label.

My sister-in-law's graduation reception was at the Ramada Mitchell Conference Center. There was a drawing of all the local Mitchell businesses handing in the lobby and right in the middle was the Mighty Palace of Corn!

I also got to stop by the gift shop to buy some presents and a new floaty pen for myself!

If you know of any Corn Palace-related stuff I should know about, please let me know in the comment section below!

Corn, PALACE, PUZZLE!!!!!!

When I was at the Corn Palace gift shop last month I bought something.

It's a puzzle! Which you know if you read the title of this post.

My wife and I put a little over half of it together and then I spilled coffee all over it.

This made it much harder to finish the puzzle.

The pieces separated in half the long way. It changed the colors of the pieces it touched. The pieces also swelled a little so they didn't fit together very well.

We put it all together.

Then Princess Melawesome figured out that some of the pieces were in the wrong spots.

She figured out which ones were in wrong and put it all together correctly!

Over-all it was a pretty good puzzle. It was fun until I ruined it with Gevalia Traditional Roast. I think it's probably a good puzzle. It would've been hard enough because of all the different shades of blue in the sky, but the coffee-shaded pieces, swelling, and piece halving made it much more frustrating.

Anyway, we finished it.

What year was this Corn Palace display? I don't remember for sure. Usually it says the year on the front of the building, but either it didn't this year or they edited it out to... make the puzzle more timeless?

I thought about checking the box but...

I've spent way too much time and energy on this puzzle.

I hope you're happy. I did it for you.

Some more Corn Palace Pics from Around Mitchell.

I was in Mitchell last week so I took a bunch of pictures of different artistic renderings of the Corn Palace from around town.

That's all for now! There were several other pictures I wanted to take, but didn't get a chance to while I was there. I'll have to get them next time.

Do you have any Corn Palace related stuff you'd like to suggest or contribute? Send it to me and I'll put it up!

Where can I find these clips?

There are at least 2 clips from television that feature/mention the Corn Palace that I've been meaning to use on this blog since I started it but have not been able to find. I will link to a couple pages that mention them, but have searched many, many times for them and have not been able to find any clips or other evidence.

Road Rules:

On the first season of Mtv's Road Rules they went to the Corn Palace. I remember watching the episode on TV in college when I lived in Mitchell. I can not find a clip and the only references I can find are in summaries of the previous episode 01/12 "Crash Up and Bang Up Time",

"Over the loudspeaker, the cast finds that the next mission will take them to Mitchell, South Dakota, where they will visit the Corn Palace."

The next episode 01/13 "Meeting the Stoned Presidents" is mentioned, but I can't even find a summary of the episode, let alone a clip.

If anyone can point me towards a clip or at least a summary, I'd appreciate it.

Teen Angel:

(image from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teen_Angel_%281997_TV_series%29)

This one is a mention and maybe an image. It's from when the Teen Angel guy is talking to God... or his head... or maybe his friend who he was sent back to help or something... I don't remember this show very well. I don't remember seeing this episode, but my wife told me about it and I looked it up. All I could find was a couple line on a message board somewhere:

Rod: "Quit doing that, or I'll send you there!
Mike: "Not The Mitchell Corn Palace in Mitchell South Dakota!?!"
Rod: "What?! No, the other there! I'm talking about Hell!)

That's the only reference I've been able to find! I would love to see this clip an post it! If you have it or know where I can find it, please let me know!

Love,

Sethifus

The World's Only Corn Palace!

This, my friends, is my Corn Palace blog! A collection of things related to the Mighty Palace of Corn in Mitchell South Dakota! It's marvelous, unique, and, yes, silly, but I like it! Here's a picture of from 2008:

I went to college in Mitchell, met my wife there, and graduated inside the Corn Palace.

Here's a pic of the inside. From a graduation, but not mine.

I will add posts about Corn Palace-related things as I find them. If you have any fun Corn Palace information, send it to me at pondercouch@gmail.com!
